"Deus lo volt! Chronicle of the Crusades" by Evan S. Connell A masterly novelist re-creates the medieval campaigns in all their depravity, faith and : Marion Lignana Rosenberg. Evan S. Connell. Evan S. Connell, recognised as one of the most important voices in American literature, was the author of seventeen books, including Mrs Bridge, Mr Bridge and the bestselling Son of the Morning Star, his account of Custer's final battle at the Little Big Horn, and his book about the crusades, Deus lo Volt! In he was nominated for the Man Booker international prize.

Evan Shelby Connell Jr. (Aug – Janu ) was a U.S. novelist, poet, and short-story writer. He also published under the name Evan S. Connell Jr. His writing covered a variety of genres, although he published most frequently in e works: Mrs. Bridge, Mr. Bridge, Son of the . "Lo" is Italian for "it." "Volt" is third person singular for the Medieval French verb Voler - to will, wish, desire, want. That's pretty strange, to say the least. The phrase appears variously as deus vult, dieu le veut, deus lo volt, etc etc and even though every book about the crusades mentions it in one form or another, no one ever says where it comes from.

Deus lo Volt! is an amazingly accurate accountof the Crusades. A brilliantly written and informative chronicle, this book isexcellent for research or just as an historic read.   Forty years later, in his novel “Deus Lo Volt!” he wrote about the brutality of the Christian crusades in the Middle East. Four years after that, in , he published a biography of the Author: William Yardley.

Deus Lo Volt. is a fascinating take on the Crusades. It begins as a chronicle of the beginnings of the Crusades before becoming the story of the chronicle's narrator through the second half. The result is a view of the Crusades through the eyes of someone living through it, and looking back on the events that led him to his own situation/5(30).

This book is a little long in the prose. It reminds me of Tynneson's Idylls of the King. It's not poetry, but it has the same feel. I found the end of the book particularly powerful.

For a book that comprises the entire 12th century, it is very concise and well thought out. Deus Lo Volt /5. With Deus Lo Volt!, Connell’s new novel of the Christian Crusades, he seems to have found a way to take all that is great from his early work and turn it into a devastating novel.

Deus lo volt. isn't exactly a novel; it's more of a narrative " omnium gatherum," or " anatomy," much closer in spirit to medieval saints' lives and wonder tales than to virtually any contemporary fiction about its demanding subject (Zoe Oldenbourg's almost forgotten historical novels are perhaps its closest equivalent).

Magnificent : Evan S. Connell. Whether it also embraces Evan S. Connell's Deus Lo Volt. Chronicle of the Crusades is a nice question, but probably unanswerable. It may also be moot, because in pre-publication publicity Connell emphasizes that he thinks of Deus as a book about the Crusades, not an historical novel.
