Its principles drew on field research conducted over 30 years, partly in Idaho, but primarily on a 7,acre piece of Northwest Montana land, which the book calls “the heart of western larch. Even after 50 years, species richness was less in the abandoned peatlands. Lavoie et al. (a) assessed vegetation dynamics of a vacuum-mined peatland in southern Quebec 14 years following abandonment. During the 5-year monitoring period, cotton grass decreased in cover while ericaceous shrubs increased on the site.

Ina levels-of-growing-stock study was begun in young, even-aged western larch (Larix occidentalis Nutt.) in northeastern Oregon.

The study was done to provide information on the growth response of western larch to a wide range of stocking levels. This paper reports results 15 years after the study was begun.

Results for the first 5 and. This note presents results from a levels-of-growing-stock study begun in in the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon.2 Ihe study was designed to obtain basic information on the growth of even-aged larch stands thinned to several density levels by two methods.

Thinning in young western larch stands, preferably before enhances the growth of diameter and height during the juvenile years when response potential is greatest.

Drastic reduction in the densities found in most unthinned stands is advisable. A calibration thinning and the first treatment thinning in a year-old Douglas-fir stand at Hoskins, Oregon, are described.
